Overview

This is a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) module that can either be taken on its own or as part of a larger accredited Level 2, 3 or 4 qualification for swimming teachers. This module is fully accredited and certified through Qualifi, a UK regulated awarding organisation. This CPD opportunity, building on your pre-requisite, will deem you competent (at the time of successful completion) to deliver this specialist area.

This coaching competitive swimming module looks at the requirements for swimmers as they become more advanced and require more training to progress further in their swimming and aquatic journey. The transition for swimmers from the learn-to-swim programme to a swimming club is important; the emphasis should always be on the quality of a swimmer’s technique should be maintained and developed further. This should be supported by enhancing their skills.

Module Aim

The module aim is to develop the learner’s ability to coach children in advanced swimming within a learn-to-swim programme environment.

The purpose of this module is to develop the principles and practices of teaching competitive swimming to children. The learner will develop their knowledge and practice of the four competitive strokes, and a range of skills. They will be able to plan and deliver sessions and evaluation effectively, and in accordance with the standards of Swim England Aquatic Skills Stages 8 – 10 Competitive Swimming. Furthermore, post-course planning, teaching and evaluations will be required as part of the module.

Syllabus

This module has two learning outcomes with ten assessment criteria.

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

 1. Understand the principles of competitive swimming
 2. Be able to plan, deliver and evaluate competitive swimming sessions in a learn-to-swim environment

The learners will achieve competency in the learning outcomes by demonstrating their ability to:

 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the current Swim England competitive swimming awards
 2. Explain a range of competitive starts
 3. Describe a range of competitive turns
 4. Demonstrate knowledge of the four competitive strokes, styles, variations and drills
 5. Explain how to operate lessons safely
 6. Produce two contrasting schemes of work on teaching competitive swimming
 7. Plan, deliver and evaluate a series of four linked sessions linked to one of the schemes of work, demonstrating progressive activities, suitable to the needs of the group
 8 Plan, carry out and evaluate two sessions covering a range of skills
 9. Deliver sessions that are safe, effective and where learners make suitable progress
 10. Evaluate as to the effectiveness of the teaching, reviewing the strengths and weaknesses

Pre-requisites

  Learners must be at least 16 years of age at the start of the module or qualification
  Hold any of:
   o ASA Level 2 Swimming Teacher (RQF)
   o ASA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics (QCF)
   o STA Level 2 Certificate in Swimming Teaching (QCF)

Recognition of Prior Learning

Any other qualifications (overseas and earlier pre-QCF qualifications) will be considered on an individual basis for entry and relevance to this unit. Any learner who holds a qualification at Level 2 or above (eg ASA Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Swimming (QCF)) may be able to receive RPL for the specialist unit. It is likely there will be completion of work to ensure that validity and authenticity of the learner.

Assessment

  This module is assessed through a learner produced portfolio of evidence and marked internally
  Part of the module portfolio will be complete on the course, the remainder will be completed in the workplace and submitted on completion for assessment

Certification

On successful completion of this module the learner can be awarded a unit certification by Qualifi in Coaching Competitive Swimming Practice in Learn-to-Swim Programmes at Level 2 if taken as a single unit or gain credit towards a larger Level 2, 3 or 4 qualification for swimming teachers.
